Nurses Week 2023

Nurses week is a publicly celebrated observance, to show appreciation for essential workers (nurses), and to recognize their contributions in the health care community.

Every year, from May 6 – 12, national nurses week is celebrated, honoring the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who was the founder of modern nursing.

This year, BAYADA wanted to celebrate nurses who are specially designed to do life-enhancing work, by having a $7,000 room makeover giveaway.

BAYADA Nurses Week

Concept

The concept of the site was to tie-in the words ‘A Nurse by Design’, with a room design makeover. Nurses have the opportunity to enter a $7,000 room makeover giveaway, to have that perfect before-and-after room.

The winner of the giveaway will have a room designed by two DIY professionals, as well as $7,000 worth of curated furniture and décor.

UI and UX

This was a one-page WordPress website, developed with custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code. The logos, icons, and illustrative artwork are all written with SVG code, while the images are high-res PNGs. When in mobile view, the navigation changes to a social app-like icon menu, while the partnership section goes from a grid layout to a swiper.

Journey

For as long as I can remember, I have been drawing and creating art. My love for drawing and art, lead me to my passion for graphic design. My passion for graphic design eventually lead me to another passion, web design.

My graphic design journey began in the fall of 1997, when I was a sophomore in high school. My art teacher explained to my class, if we planned on continuing our creative path in college, there were five traditional courses that would be available to us, fine art (painting and illustration), graphic design, photography, sculpting, and industrial design.

With that information at hand, I decided to take Saturday courses in graphic design—at what eventually would become my alma mater—The University of the Arts. It was at that point, when I instantly fell in love with graphic design. What I learned from those Saturday courses, as well as how I was taught throughout my four years at The University of the Arts, molded me into the designer I am today.

I have been a graphic designer in the advertising and marketing fields, since 2004. Throughout those years, I took an interest in web design, and writing HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) code, which are the two core technologies for building websites. It wasn’t until 2011 when I realized I wanted to take my career in a different direction, so I began studying, learning, and honing my skills on writing HTML and CSS code.

In September of 2014, I left my job as a Marketing Communications Specialist, to fulfill a forever dream of having my own design business. As a design consultant, I provided businesses with my expert and professional advice, skills, and knowledge in the areas of graphic design, web design (being my main focus), illustration, and animation. Through these specific areas, I was able to give each business a much deeper level of product development and marketing management.

In December of 2020—after six years of having my business—BAYADA, a company that was a client of mine for more than four years, offered me a full-time position as the Senior Graphic Designer. Now, by combining my graphic design knowledge with my web design knowledge, I am able to design and develop projects from a much different perspective.

I’ve had the privilege and honor of working with both small businesses and large companies, and have established a reputation for my innovative designs, concepts, and techniques. I have a passion for designing and developing beautiful products, as well as a keen awareness of both modern and traditional cultures and styles in art and design, and I take pride in my academic background, creative strategy, and work ethics.

Process

One of the many things I learned during my four years at The University of the Arts—that I still follow to this day—was to formulate a process; an approach, steps and guidelines, getting you from an idea to an end result.

01

Idea

Start with forming an idea, then, defining a direction and goal, so that you can begin planning how to bring that idea to life.

02

Strategy

Do your research. Gather information based on your idea, then, brainstorm and sketch concepts, in order to outline the idea.

03

Design

Now the fun begins. By taking all of your research, you can now begin to shape and define the idea with visual elements.

04

Deliver

Fine-tune the design, reviewing every detail and making sure it’s perfect, in preparing to deliver the final product.
